Tool Type
Group Control
Purpose
Break out groups can be used for a variety of reasons. Firstly they can allow you speed up discussion and brainstorming as smaller groups can focus better and reach consensus quicker. Second, break out groups can be used to disrupt a negative group dynamic. For instance, if an individual(s) is negatively affecting the group dynamic, breaking the group into smaller units reduces the impact that the individual(s) has. Also where a group is unmotivated or disinterested, breaking the group into smaller ‘teams’ and introducing an element of competition may help inject a little more energy into the group dynamic.
